Mate's White Front Tavern

Mate’s White Front Tavern opened in 1935 at 3729 West 16th Street. The white painted house gave the inspiration for it’s name. In 1952, they moved to 3535 West 16th Street due to new road configurations.

Mate’s was a regular hangout for drivers like A.J. Foyt, Bobby Unser, Bill Vukovich & Lloyd Ruby.

In one marketing ploy, the owners handed out Mate’s t-shirts and told drivers they would receive a free lunch if they could show proof that they wore them to the track.

Needless to say, a lot of free lunches were given.
